Anyone born before the year 2000 knows that our history in entertainment has not been so glamorous. We have shucked, jived, and “carried on” to make people laugh for years. Bojangles (not the chicken), Stepin Fetchit, and many others may have been some of our first stars in a white-owned and dominated entertainment industry. And how today’s stars and athletes aren’t too far from that. But what choices do we have? Kit is mad at me because I feel like Hip Hop was founded by white people. Until we control the art by monetizing our own creations, we are going to feel this way and have these arguments.
